Seeds of Serenity
The essence of yoga is to achieve union. From this perspective the process of birth, if allowed to proceed naturally, is yoga in itself. There is a complete union, an absolute oneness, a total merger between the mind, body and soul of the mother as also between the mother and child in the womb. The experience and the process of birth in this sense is a yogic event.
A woman undergoes a complete rebirth along with the birth of a child. This is akin to a type of spiritual rebirth or awakening in yoga. In the absence of this conscious awakening the mother and child are not able to connect or unite with one another.
The yogic perspective envisages that the entire universe dwells in the self. The knowledge about the true meaning of birth is also included in this self. The realization of self emerges only with the union of the mind, body and soul. The self resides within the individual and each individual has the capacity to discover it.
In order to achieve the ultimate bliss of union in yoga many preparatory steps have to be undertaken. A woman has all the knowledge she requires to become a good mother, hidden within her. To fully realize the bliss associated with the process of birth, certain preparation is required. Yoga enables the union of opposites and thus makes it possible to attain the awakening.
Recent researches have revealed that the fetus is sensitive to odors even within the womb. It was earlier envisaged that smell is dependant upon air and hence the fetus cannot possibly have olfactory perception. However scientific research in the recent times has found that the chemoreceptive system of the nose is extremely complex.
Although fetal sense modalities do not operate independently as in post natal babies, they work in close connection with one another. The sensation of pain felt by the prenatal babies cannot be expressed in the form of sound due to non-availability of air to conduct it. However the agitated movements, elevated heart beat, vigorous breath and hormonal changes makes it apparent that prenates do, in fact, sense pain.
The research findings so far make it clear that the seed of perception, sensation to pain and pleasure, sensitivity to light, sound and sound vibrations is laid in the womb it- self. During pregnancy a mother is advised to observe a relaxed life style, be in a positive frame of mind and incorporate healthy eating and living habits.
Various scientific observations more recently lend support to this the age-old knowledge. The Indian mythology speaks of Astabakra, who was born with complete knowledge of yoga right from birth. Abhimanyu (Arjuna’s son) gained knowledge of breaking a difficult battle formation in his mother’s womb. His mother had listened to the discussion on this subject between Arjuna and Krishna.
The baby in the womb is influenced by the outside world and more significantly by the mother’s actions, reactions and feelings. Positive feelings and responses of the mother produce the positive hormones associated with it. This in turn is transferred to the baby in the womb.
