The Wisdom from Vedas
By  Agantuk

The word ‘Veda’ derived from the root Vid (to know), indicates a vast body of sacred knowledge revealed to the great ones called rishis in the depths of their meditation. As such, they are the revered scriptures of Hinduism. For centuries they have been handed down to the posterity by oral tradition.

They are the oldest books in the library of man and are rightly considered the mother of all religions. Their message has no barriers of race, creed or religion. It is universal and eternal. There are four Vedas, known as Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. Altogether they contain about 21,000 verses! Ayurveda got developed from Atharva Veda, which deals mostly with science.

Today, unfortunately, the nectar of Vedas is restricted to scholars and priestly class of Brahmins only and they are more or less closed books. This is so for two reasons, firstly they are in Sanskrit which is a language of a very few and secondly, their composition is terse, archaic and esoteric.

Since most of the Western world doesn’t have a direct contact with Sanskrit scholars, who could decipher Vedas to it, from now onwards we will be featuring translations of some select verses in this column and elsewhere on this website for the benefit of our visitors. To begin with, here are a few:

Eternity is sky, eternity is mid air.
Eternity is mother, father and son.
Eternity is all that exists.
Eternity is the social consciousness.
Eternal are all that have been born.

To mind goes far away
To heaven and earth,
Call it back to thyself,
So that it may remain
Under thy control.

Keep thy mind and body in
perfect condition.
These are the first requisites
to achieve the desired goal.

A mind that is in the state of
perpetual worship is never
overshadowed by the
dark clouds of sorrow..
