Diet and Disease - I
By  Dr P M Sharma

In an endless race for success in life, having a proper meal takes a backseat. Those who think that time is money do not want to waste their time on meals. Such people forget that proper meals are the foundation for a sound body, and a sound mind lives in a sound body.

It is a common practice among most of us to read a newspaper, magazine, or watch television, dictate business letters, and chat on some trivial issues while we eat.

According to Ayurveda, this amounts to being disrespectful towards our food, and of course, towards our digestion. Such behavior leads to problems as indigestion, depression, hyperacidity, loss of appetite, and stomach winds. While we do something else when we should have been eating, we are very rapid in the process, which ingests air into our body along with the food. The result is gas in the stomach. Most of the gas in the stomach and approximately 50 percent of the gas in the intestine arises from the swallowed air.

Some time this ingested air can move up ward and press the diaphragm then you feel difficulty in breathing, restlessness and heaviness in chest.

The swallowed air with the partially chewed food disturbs the pachak pitta, saman vata and kledak kafa. All of these doshas are responsible for whatever goes on in your digestive tract. Disturbed doshas can't perform their duty well. Due to poor digestion excessive production of ama or toxins takes place. Ama is supposed to be the cause of a number of diseases. In fact, Ayurveda says wherever you a disease, ama is there. Improper eating is the first trigger towards the rise of ama; the fall of which is quite often a pricey proportion.
