Poliomyelitis is, according to modern medical science, an acute viral disease. There are three types of the viruses known as 1, 2 and 3 that are involved.
These are transmitted to human being mainly via stool or oral route. The viruses can also spread through sneeze and cough-produced droplets.
The entry of the virus is through the oral cavity and intestines. The neuropathy occurs in the disease due to multiplication of virus in the nerve cells.
In Ayurveda, this disease called known as bal pakshaghat.
Bal means a child and pakshaghat is paralysis.
This is a vata-related problem, and aggravation of vata further complicates the same.
Following are some of the Ayurvedic drugs given in post-polio management:
– Aekangveer ras
– Kumarkalyan ras
– Ashwagandha churna
Massage with Ayurvedic medicated oils like Mahamash tail, Chanden bala laxadi tail, Mahanarayan tail and Vishgarbha tail.
Only Shali shashtik swedan is given.
This is given with extreme care in a measured manner.
A clinical trial was held on post-polio management using above standards (except Basti) in M.N.A. Ayurvedic College, Rohtak, Haryana. The trial was conducted under the supervision of Dr. S.D.Sharma. B.A.M.S., M.D., Ph.D. (Ayurveda), who heads the Department of Kaumarbhritya (Ayurvedic pediatrics), in M.N.A. Ayurvedic college Rohtak, Haryana.
While the 16-patient trial is still underway, some of the results got so far are as below: Patients (children) were divided into three groups of less than 3 years(5), between 4-6(8), and above 6(3). Male children were 10 and female 6. The results were as below:
– Excellent = 7
– Moderate = 4
– Mild = 2
– No results = 3
The outcome variations, according to the researchers, were directly linked to duration of illness, severity, extent of damages, and subject immunity.
