Managing Myocarditis
By  Dr P M Sharma

This is an acute, sub-acute, or chronic cardiac problem, which is characterized by an inflammatory process. This can be acute, due to infection of virus, bacteria, and protozoa. Apart from infection, this may be due to rheumatism. In the US the most common cause is virus. The HIV and radiation induced myocarditis is also described in modern medical science.

DIAGNOSIS

The signs and symptoms vary according to cause. The chronic myocarditis has been recognizing in 10-25 percent of patient population after endomyocardial biopsy.

AYURVEDA

In Ayurveda, this is called KOSTHYA HRIDYA ROGA. Kosthya means in side or chamber, Hridya means to heart, and roga is disease.

However, the classical Ayurvedic texts say:

SADA ABHIGHATADATHVAAMWATAIVA ASMADADADI GHORATAT KADACHIT VIMUCHYATE KOPI GADITUDEVAT TRANSLATION

Due to trauma, rheumatism (amavata), takes place. Loss of interest, fever, weakness, or impediment, dysponea, tremors, cough, burning sensation, tuberculosis, and syncope are the common symptoms. This is widely observed in the KRIMIJ HRIDYA ROG type category.

Some of the Ayurvedic drugs used are hritpatri churna, yavakshar, moolika kashar, shwet parpatee, punarnava mandoor, ras sindoor, hridayarnav rasa, nagarjuna rass, amvatari rasa, rasmanikya, shuddh gandhak, siddha makardhwaj ras, kapot vishtham, akik pistee, singhanad guggulu, mahayograj guggulu, vidangadi lauha, krimimudgar rasa, krimi kuthar rasa, mrigank rasa, swarn bhasma, and vajra rasa etc
