A WORLD class resort for alternative medicine, the first of its kind in the Gulf, started functioning in Bahrain yesterday.

The first phase of the Bahrain Wellness Resort (BWR) has been completed at a cost of BD1 million in Janabiya.

BWR will be the Gulf's largest centre for internationally accepted forms of alternative medicine therapies, said chief executive officer Dr Abdulrahman Bu'ali.

"We have initiated treatment using India's most ancient system of medicine, ayurveda," he told the GDN.

"The resort is located in Janabiya, on the most fertile land in Bahrain, in a garden of 50,000 square metres.

"Surrounded by palm trees, mango and other fruit trees, the green environment, clean air and quiet atmosphere add to the healing qualities of the resort."

Highly qualified and experienced doctors and other healthcare practitioners, both male and female, have already joined the centre.

It houses eight treatment rooms, four consultation rooms, diet department, cafeteria, swimming pool, exercise hall, library and reading room, herbal pharmacy and reception area, besides fully furnished deluxe accommodation.

One of the prime emphasis at the resort will be on food and nutrition, said Dr Bu'ali.

"We are what we eat," he said. "Food plays the most important role in our life. What we eat, how much we eat, when we eat - all of these reflect on our body."

BWR's future plan is to include other alternative therapies like homeopathy, chiropractic (expert treatment for backache and spine diseases), iridology (diagnosis through reading the iris), acupuncture, energy healing and other forms of alternative therapies, said Dr Bu'ali, who is former Health Ministry under-secretary and currently a Shura Council member.

"Our mission is to help people in keeping their health sound, and to become healthier by using our unique services," he noted.

"The resort is located just one kilometre away from the King Fahad Causeway, and the project has already generated interest in other GCC countries."

The BWR philosophy is based on prevention rather than intervention; education rather than medication, said Dr Bu'ali.

People who used to travel to Ayurvedic centres in India can now experience the same treatment and therapies at BWR, said chief physician Dr Devidas Vellodi.

Dr Vellodi, who is director of Kerala's Herbs Health Foundation, is a graduate of the world-renowned Kottackal Arya Vaidya Sala's Ayurvedic Medical College..
