Ayurvedya: The Holistic Way of Health
Ayurveda emphasizes on living one’s life in harmony with the nature. Its goal is to endure perfect health for all – individual as well as society. Through simple practices of regulated diet and disciplined daily routine it helps to synergize the individual lives with community lives.
Ayurveda, unlike many other modern systems of medicine, has a holistic approach towards the concept of ‘health’. Ayurveda does not treat individuals as an isolated entity. It perceives every individual to be closely connected with the universe as a whole.
In the last few decades there has been a greater emphasis on the holistic approach towards health defining it in four dimensions –physical, mental, social and spiritual.
The age-old texts of Ayurveda have always talked about these four aspects much before the practitioners of modern medicine in the developed part of the world started talking about it.
According to Acharya Sushruta, an authority in the ancient times on Ayurveda, a person is healthy when he is in a state of equilibrium within himself as well as with outside universe.
The main goal of Ayurveda is not to treat an individual patient but to treat the human suffering as a whole and ensure that individuals live in harmony with each other and with their environment while following the laws of nature.
According to Ayurveda, the laws of nature govern the individuals and nature is intelligent and kind enough to take care of the human beings provided the latter is ready to follow the former instead of trying to master it.
As Ayurveda is known as the ‘science of life’, this oldest system of Indian medicine aims at not merely curing ailments but its stress is on preventing illness and prolonging life of individuals through various medicines which are mainly prepared from various herbs and other natural products.
The principle of ‘holistic way of health’ followed by the practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine are based not merely on theoretical propositions but they are based on practical experiences and observations that date back to thousands of years.
