Health Benefits of Meditation

Many often regard meditation as merely a spiritual practice. But an increasing number of practitioners of medicine, belonging not only to Ayurveda but to other systems of medicine also, have started recognizing the health benefits of meditation.

Various studies have shown that meditation lowers the responsiveness of the human body to the stress hormone norepinephrine that often causes blood pressure to rise and heart rate to increase when one is under stress.

That is why meditation has become one of the most widely prescribed 'remedy' for people under high stress. A person who meditates regularly is able to control his or her body's reaction to stress instead of it controlling the person.

Meditation also reduces muscle tension and headaches. As it lowers the oxygen consumption and decreases the rate of respiration leading to deeper relaxation, it is very beneficial for patients suffering from high blood pressure as well as various heart ailments.

Meditation increases serotonin production in human body influencing behaviour and mood of individuals positively. It may me mentioned here that low levels of serotonin are known to be associated with obesity, insomnia and depression.

Meditation also strengthens the immune system. It is helpful in the post-operative healing. It is used while treating chronic diseases such as arthritis and various allergies.

The deepest of neuroses and fears, which cause stress and ill health, can be treated effectively by meditation. Meditation can help to resolve the deepest of neuroses, fears and conflict, which play their part in causing stress and ill health.

It has been observed that meditation leads to better body luster and improved general health. While meditating as one concentrates on a particular part of the body, the blood flow to this particular body part increases. The cells receive various nutrients and oxygen in abundance.

Today, many of the film stars and fashion models include meditation in their daily regimen. As meditation reduces the emotional distress and strengthens the mind, more and more sports persons are getting inclined towards various forms of meditation.
