Optimum Agni for Better Health
In Ayurveda, agni (fire) is defined as the biological fire which
guides metabolism in the human body. There is a need to ensure that
human body has optimum agni so that there is no malfunctioning of the
digestive system. Agni manifests itself is in the form of various enzymes and acids.
They break down the food in our stomach and act like a fire so that
our body can get all the nutrients.
Optimum agni level not only helps in better digestion, higher energy
levels but it also destroys harmful microbes in the body and
various toxins that affect our digestive system.
Agni is present in every cell and tissue of the body. The physical
strength of a body and the sharpness of the mind depend to a great
extent on the presence of right quantity of agni.
According to Ayurveda, there are broadly 13 types of agnis in a human
body. Jathragni (gastric fire) is considered to be the most
important one as it is responsible for proper digestion of food. If
gastric fire is not optimal, one generally feels great discomfort
and at times pain too.
To improve low levels of agni, practitioners of Ayurveda system of
medicine often prescribe raw honey combined with ghee. But one should
not go for self-medication and take an advice of a qualified
To ensure that one does not have sub-optimal level of agni, some of
the actions such as overeating, eating irregularly and too quickly
should be avoided.
One should also avoid eating while watching television as lack of
proper attention to the food during eating could adversely affect
levels of 'agni'.
Excessive amount of liquids during meals and an unbalanced diet also
result in sub-optimal level of agni. Excessive sleep and extreme
climatic conditions, distress and anger may affect the optimal level
of agni also.
