Benefits of Grains in Ayurveda

Grains are an important component of balanced diet as they provide various nutritional elements such as iron, calcium, vitamins carbohydrates, proteins etc. In Ayurveda system of medicine it is generally recommended to include grains in every meal as they are the prime source of energy for the human body and strengthen the endurance.

Adequate quantities of grain are important especially for vegetarians as they help in building the tissues and muscle bones. When combined with certain other vegetarian products such as milk, milk products, beans and pulses, grains provide important proteins which are the crucial building blocks of the human body.

Ayurveda recommends different types and quantities of grains according to the physiology of a person.

For example products made of wheat help in balancing the "Vata" as they are source of high levels of energy. They also help in enhancing the physical strength. Those who need to balance their Vata should thus consume higher quantities of wheat.

However, if one is trying to check his or her body weight then one should consume relatively less quantities of wheat and larger quantities of certain other grains such as barley.

The 'Kapha' imbalance can be perpetuated by consumption of high quantities of wheat. Those suffering from this imbalance may not stop consuming it altogether but they should reduce its quantity.

The "Kapha" imbalance can be corrected by higher quantities of barley. They also benefit those suffering from "Pitta" imbalance. One should preferably go for organic barley, which is easily available in most of the prominent health stores.
