Quit smoking without medication

Smoking is additive because of the presence of nicotine in cigarettes. Though it may seem to be difficult to quit smoking without any medication, it is possible through belief and commitment to stop smoking. According to Ayurveda, a person tends to turn to cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and food to calm excessive mental activity. However it is possible to control this excessive mental activity using natural and holistic measures.

Drinking lots of water that is kept in a copper container, helps scrape toxic deposits in the body. The deposits of tar, nicotine and toxic compounds found in the body can be eliminated using one or three tablespoons of triphala every night before retiring. Toning herbs like Ashwagandha, bala, ginseng and shatavari are helpful in detoxification.

When quitting smoking, avoid alcohol, coffee and sugar for the first week or so as these stimulants provide a desire for cigarettes. It is advisable to avoid fatty foods as stopping nicotine slows down your metabolism; and with fatty foods, you will gain weight even if you eat as you did before quitting. A low fat, vegetarian diet helps increase the Sattvic quality of the mind as all fresh foods contain prana which increase ojas. If hungry, nibble on low calorie foods like apples, carrots and celery. Chewing gum or sucking on cinnamon sticks when having a craving for cigarettes is rather effective.

Adding exercise to your smoking cessation plan makes it easier to quit smoking. It helps to avoid the gaining of weight when quitting smoking, and also provides other benefits like stress reduction. Yoga helps relax the body and its exercise incorporates stretching in the body while increasing strength and vitality in the body. Of course, you can experience the maximum effects of these tips, if and when you really want to stop smoking. You need lots of will power and commitment that you will quit smoking for the health problems it causes.
