Peeping Through The Self

The Hindu religious scripture, Bhagavad Gita, says in the first lesson: “I am a spirit soul. I am different from the body. The spirit soul is a living force, but the material body is not.” You do whatever you do is not because you have a body and its individual components – hands, eyes, feet, fingers and so on – but because you are a spirit soul. All your body parts are dull matter, which is activated by the spiritual force present in you. When that happens, your body becomes totally spiritual, energized.

Those of us who understand this phenomenon tend to respect the body, its components, their energy and the force that works behind the same. Those who don’t, utilize the energy in a wrong manner. Vedas call it pragyaparaad, which means illicit use of senses. People practicing pragyaparaad never peep through the self, which deprives them of a chance to correct their actions. When you have no time for self-introspection, you are never able to take a note of your wrong actions.

We may not know about it but it is very interesting to note that people of highest professional stature have always had time for self-introspection. Most of them took stock of their lives by their hearts and probably not only heads. Heart is a seat of emotion, love and compassion; head, in all probability, is a seat of false ego. A number of religious preachers have remarked that you inspire whole generations with your work only when your heart crackles a unique fire within your work. Heart tends you to be truthful in whatever you do, and thankful to God for whatever He has bestowed you with. The profoundest way to serve the purpose of your life is to live it – with heart and by the soul.

Albert Einstein one remarked: "The finest emotion of which we are capable is the mystic emotion. Herein lies the germ of all art and all true science. Anyone to whom this feeling is alien, who is no longer capable of wonderment and lives in a state of fear, is a dead man. To know that what is impenetrable for us really exists and manifests itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, whose gross forms alone are intelligible to our poor faculties - this knowledge, this feeling ... that is the core of the true religious sentiment. In this sense, and in this sense alone, I rank myself among profoundly religious men." In the same breath he has said: "When the solution is simple, God is answering." By referring to God, Einstein may have been referring to the Pure Inner Self.

Most of us have the same force running through us that allows the planets to move, the earth to orbit, the seeds to sprout, and the flowers to open. We all are driven by a common and universal intelligence that flows through us. Until we locate the sacred space within us that holds this intelligence, we can’t recognize this force. As soon as we do, most of the things that may have seemed difficult earlier, start opening up in front of us clearly, visibly, easily. This is when you, in a sense, become a person of self-introspection, whose commandments emanate from a quiet inner sacred space.
