Art and Science
of Yoga – II

Yoga presents priceless insights into the complex and strong links between the body and the mind. Due to this intricate relationship, a mental state of tranquility is achieved when the body is posited in particular postures. Through his meticulous study of the yogic scriptures and writings Osho propounds that yoga doesn’t comprise merely of a set of body postures or a type of physical exercise comparable to many others, it is based on a subtle knowledge of the human body and mind and thus devising a unique technique for restoring balance and achieving the natural state of equilibrium. In this sense yoga is actually the science of soul.

The yogic tradition, which has found its genesis in India, dates back to above 5,000 years. Since then it has traveled across continents, benefiting millions of people all over the world. This unique technique, of achieving enlightenment; life long natural healing, has cut across the cultural boundaries, unifying the east with the west. Eminent public figures, celebrities and common people are increasingly accepting yoga and integrating it into their life. The shift from the time when yoga was unknown in America, to one where 15 million Americans incorporate yoga in various aspects to their exercise and fitness routine and 75% of health clubs in America provide classes on yoga; has been due the intrinsic values of this ancient art, or science or both.

There has been a paradigm shift in how people view yoga. It is no longer viewed as a mere vehicle towards enlightenment, but also as an alternative and less invasive method of healing, distressing and body sculpturing as well as a form of exercise. Practitioners of yoga have continually benefited from it, thus reinforcing their faith, and promoting it further. Modern men have thus accepted the goodness of yoga reinventing it to suit their sensibilities.

The growing popularity of yoga as it continues to reinforce people’s belief in its effectiveness as a healing technique is the most profound empirical evidence of its status as a science. Oprah Winfrey, the noted American TV personality dedicated an entire show to how yoga has improved the life of numerous people. However there have been doubts about the effectiveness of yoga in curing grave diseases like cancer or AIDS or applying yoga as the mainstream medical science and weighing it along similar parameters. Unveiling the essence of yoga divulges the answer. Yoga has been germinated in a culture, which perceives the body from 'inside out'. In sharp contrast to this, west’s perception of the body can best be summarized as an 'outside in' approach. The eastern treatment focuses on the individual, whereas the western treatment focuses on the disease.
